A Head Shot A Day In The Month Of May: Superman

Today is the day!!!! The last head shot for the month of May!! I am very excited that I set this little goal for myself and actually completed it. It was a lot of fun! This little head shot project also proved to be very motivational. It kept me drawing everyday and motivated me to start up our newest blog Pterodactyls vs. Babies, which goes live June 4th. A big thanks yo everyone who showed interest in this blog experiment over the last month, and I hope everyone enjoyed there head shots. So life has been keeping me super busy lately, but I refuse to let that stop me from slowing down with my drawings, even if there is only time for a quick little sketch here and there. I will never let myself fall into the artistic funk I got into last year. So here is a little sketch I did of Darkseid. I wanted to have him slugging it out with Superman but I just couldn't get a pose that I liked....so until then it is a work in progress!!!

These are the decorations for the Halloween event at my work. They are all made out of cardboard. I drew the pictures and then had my students paint them, then I put in the details and cut them out. I really like how they turned out and it was fun getting to do a project like this with the students again. This project brought back some very fond memories of my days back at the youth home, working until all hours of the night painting backdrops and decorations.

That is the description of this Marvel comics character from Wikipedia. I had never heard of this character before but I decided to draw my take on him! I have been sick the last few days and have been laid up, so I added a bit of color to this on my laptop. Not easy coloring on a laptop track pad!

This is a character named Serra from Mike Wieringo and Todd Dezago's Tellos. Any of you who know me well know that Mike Wieringo is my favorite artist. Mike passed away a few years ago, so I tend to get just a bit nostalgic when I draw one of his characters. I am also trying to continue practicing coloring my work. I realize that I want to continue trying to get better at this style of coloring, and though it looks very simple it is much harder than I ever thought it could be. So Disney bought Marvel, and along with that Disney gains a catalog of over 5000 characters! The second I heard about this I knew that reactions would be mixed! I for one am excited to see what Disney does with this, especially if it means new episodes of Spectacular Spiderman on DisneyXD. I just don't want to see any of the Marvel stuff spill over into the parks!

Sooooo, this sketch was inspired by an inside joke with my friend Steve. It has to do with a line in a song, and the fact that Steve is the last person you would probably ever expect to see wearing a big pink bunny suit. So, this one is for you Steve. On another note, I am really enjoying my vacation so far. I just finished reading the second Harry Potter book (I am addicted) and have been drawing a lot! I also have been watching the first season of Spectacular Spider-man on DVD. It is a great series and I would suggest it to any fan of the web head. I am starting to feel more comfortable coloring my work, I still have a lot of work to do to get my work where I want it to be. I do however feel that since I have been drawing so much lately that there has been a big improvement since I started back up. There is no excuse to not be drawing for as long as I was, it is not hard to get rusty! Anyway, I managed to make my goal of posting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and now (since I have officialy started my vacation from work) I am going to go and enjoy my weekend!!! This started off as a quick sketch and then and hour later I was done, hahaha! I was happy with the way it turned out, but lately I feel like I am really struggling to adhere to one particular style. The last two posts I put up are more cartoony, while this has a little bit more of a traditional comic book look to it. I am more a fan of the cartoony styles and have found that just because one particular drawing may look simple, does not mean that it is easy to draw.

San Diego Comic Con 2009

It is that time of year again, COMIC CON! Every year for the past 8 years I have made my yearly trek to San Diego for the con. I remember when I first started going, my friends and I used to be able to just get up really early to be first in line for our tickets. But over the past few years now comic con has gotten bigger and bigger. I think that the movie studios play a big role in the number of people that show up to the con. The down side to these large crowds is that it makes it harder to get in, I myself almost didn't get in this year (thanks again for the ticket Alli). But despite this I am happy that Comic-con has been getting so much more popular, I am glad that there are more people being exposed to this medium; to comics. It was only a few short decades ago that comics were written off as nothing more than mindless entertainment for children. Seeing commercials for the con, television and radio shows broadcasting from there, and thousands upon thousands of fans lining up in front of hall H, means that comics are reaching people on a broader scale then ever before. So, if you are not going to the con this year, then be sure to get your ticket for next year, you won't be disappointed.

The fashion, the vernacular, the mystery and the murder are all separate but equal parts of what makes a good film noir movie.

I did this little sketch for Sonja a few months ago in our Spanish Class, Sonja suggested that I put it up on my blog. At first I was just trying to draw a cute little picture of her late hamster Super Dude but when I finished it I realized that artistically it was a tiny tribute to the little guy. He was a good hamster, he had big puffs of fur on his butt that Sonja liked to refer to as "ass jets", and he liked to eat and sleep and cuddle. So, this one is for you Super Dude!!!

The sky is falling

To me a drawing (especially a drawing of a costumed crusader) is much more fun to look at when it is fluid and simple. A drawing can really get bogged down when there is too much going on. Something I have been trying to work on lately with my art is to just have more fun with it. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in worrying what the finished product is going to look like that I end up not enjoying myself or the drawing anymore, and it shows through. Generally when I stop having fun with a drawing, that is when the drawing comes out stiff, rigid, and pretty much unemotional. So on that note, here is a picture of Superman. I drew this sketch very quickly and as you can see it is not very detailed, but I personally really like the way it turned out. I think it came out looking the way I wanted it because oddly I just shut my brain off and let my pencil go to work. When drawing it is so easy to get caught up with over thinking anatomy, form, placement, perspective, composition, etc....and while these things are important I think that they should come second on the list of what makes an enjoyable drawing. Have fun when drawing, have fun in life, have fun in all that you do, because when you do the end result is so much more pleasing. See you here next time.

Lately I have really been trying to make more time to practice my drawing. I realize there are so many things I still do not have a grasp on and I really need to improve. Originally I was going to post something a little different, it was going to be something that I was going to color in Photoshop, but like I said, there are so many things that I really need to start practicing more. One of those things would definitely be Photoshop. Anyway, I am going to keep working on that and post it here when it starts looking a bit more the way I would like it to. With all that being said, I did a few warm up sketches today. Just a few randome faces. I really enjoy drawing faces, in fact in might be my favorite thing to draw. I could actually hear the Disneyland fireworks last night as I was drawing this. I have been missing Disneyland something fierce lately so I thought I would do a quick Magic Kingdom sketch. There really is something so magical about Disneyland when you are a kid; and though I still love visiting the park as often as I can, you can never truly and completely capture that same feeling of wonder and amazement as an adult. It is important that we never truly loose our childish sense of adventure. This world is filled with a lot of dark and terrible things, but it is also filled with beautiful things, things that spark the imagination and fill our minds with fascination, brilliance and awe. It is those nice things, those charming and imaginative things that one will always want to remember.

They turn to . . . the man called Zorro...

Well I thought I would post something that in my mind kind of goes along with yesterday's post, Zorro! Zorro is by far my favorite fictional character. I have so many fond memories of watching Zorro (played by Duncan Regehr) on the Family Channel. Bob Kane (the creator of Batman) has stated before that Zorro was a huge inspiration to him when he created "The Gotham City Batman". Even George Lucas was in part inspired by Zorro when he created Indiana Jones. So with that being said I leave you today with a sketch of the original caped crusader.

Wow, it has been a loooong time since I last posted anything on here, which is kind of sad because I was doing really well for a while. Oh well "que sera, sera". I am finished with school for the semester and I have had some more free time lately so I thought I would finaly post a new sketch. I am glad that summer break is here, I think that this summer is going to be a good one. I worked so hard the last two semesters that summer break really feels like a well earned reward. That is all from me for today.

Well it has been sometime since I last posted, sometimes life just gets in the way of other things. But i figured I should start posting again, mostly just because I miss doing random sketches every other day and posting them for all to see. I hope to be a little more insightful in my next post but I'm more in the drawing zone than the wright a bunch of words zone. THE BAD AND THE BALD

Well, another Friday in upon us and another weekend is ahead of us!!!! I am really looking forward to having the next two days off, I am still adjusting to my new (or old?) schedule at work, after working four ten hour days it is kind of strange going back to the classic nine to five. For the end of the week I leave you with another sketch of a Superman character, this time it is a character from Superman's rouge gallery....Lex Luthor. I worked on this for a pretty good amount of time...there is something about it that is bothering me though, I don't think it is my best work, but the more I look at the more I am starting to like it! I hope that everyone has a great weekend, and I will see you back here on Monday!!!!

Superman Wednesday

Well here is the next picture in my effort to draw all of the Super-family characters, this one is of Superman himself!!! Superman is just such an iconic character, he really is the first real super hero/comic book character ever and he has been around so long that his image and name can bridge generations. I was showing my Grandma some of my art work yesterday and the second she saw this picture she exclaimed "oh Superman, I know him". I think that that is pretty incredible. Well that is about it for me today....if I can post another sketch on Friday I will be back on track for posting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week, well for this week at least. Have a good one everybody.

ANOTHER SHOT AT SUPERGIRL

I have been very lucky the last few weeks in the sense that I have had a lot more time to draw, and have been taking the opportunity to do so. Lately I feel that I have really been growing as an artist, and I have really been enjoying myself. As some of you know I have been working pretty diligently on an actual comic book, written by two very talented writers (and when the time is right I will share some of the work I have been doing for the book here on my blog). I have been having so much fun working on this book that in between pages I have felt inspired to keep my pencil moving and draw other sketches and pictures that suit my fancy. So with that I decided to take another crack at drawing Supergirl, I was pretty happy with my last sketch of her that I decided to draw another picture of her. I now think that it would be fun to draw the whole super-family in this pen and ink/sketch format....so, that is what I am going to start doing!!! Supergirl Friday

The last few days I have been so inspired by the art work of an artist by the name of Adam Hughes. He draws such beautiful images and is most famous for drawing very classic and beautiful looking woman. I actually was lucky enough to be able to meet Adam Hughes and get a sketch from him a few months ago at the San Diego Comic Con. So I felt inspired to draw a picture of Supergirl and ink it with a rather thick outline (somewhat of a Adam Hughes trademark). I have been feeling like experimenting with my art lately, style wise and supplies wise and I have been having a great time with it. Well that is about it for me for another week....I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Inking fun for everyone!!!

I fully realize that there are a lot of things that I need to keep practicing as far as my art goes...one of those things (as I have mentioned before) is drawing woman, another one is inking!!! A lot of people assume that inking is just "tracing", but inking really is a vital step in comic books these days. Of course something that is starting to show up a little in comics is digital inking, which is just scanning very clean drawings and adjusting the darkness and filling in the black on photoshop...however I don't think that digital inking will ever take over the art of real inks. Good inking can add depth and weight to a drawing, it can change the entire mood of a drawing and there for (even though I would never want to be and inker) it is something I need to practice. With that said, here are a few sketches I did with some ink put on top. These drawings are not really finished drawings therefore these inks are not really finished inks...but I still thought it would be fun to post them anyway!!! Endings, beginnings and Big Blue

Well today was my last late night working at the Youth Home...and after twenty five years the last resident will leave the Youth Home and we will lock the doors...five years of my life has gone into the Youth Home and it is a little sad to see it end....but life goes on and I will be starting fresh over in another part of the company...hopefully I will like it there and maybe I will make some new friends. Aside from that I have finally gotten over being sick, except for this damn cough that just wont go away...I look forward to what is on the horizon and with that I leave you with a sketch of the ultimate boy scout himself...Superman!
